Another NYU Grad Student Earns Spot in New York Times Student Journalism Institute
Arcynta L. Ali Childs, a GLOJO student in the Journalism/Caribbean and Latin American Studies joint program, has been chosen to participate in the New York Times Student Journalism Institute for members of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ).
This is only the second year of the NAHJ program, and the second time an NYU Journalism graduate student has won one of the 20 spots. Last year’s NYU winner, Laura Rivera, is now reporting for Newsday.
The institute takes place from Jan. 2-13 at the University of Arizona in Tucson. The student journalists, from colleges throughout the country, will work side-by-side with professionals from The New York Times, the Boston Globe and the Times Company Regional Papers. Each student will pursue an area of interest, ranging from reporting to copy editing, photography and graphics. Their work will appear daily on the institute’s Web site (http://www.nytimes-institute.com) and, at the end of the program, in a special-edition newspaper.
The Arizona program (which alternates with one at Florida International University in Miami) is an outgrowth of the New York Times Student Journalism Institute at Dillard University in New Orleans, for student members of the National Association of Black Journalists. Since the Dillard program started in 2003, more than 120 students have graduated and found jobs at Times company newspapers as well as the Detroit Free Press, USA Today, the Washington Post and smaller publications.
