June 17 - General Assignment Reporter for GateHouseMedia New England.

Summer reporting position on Cape Cod.
A General Assignment reporter is needed for the staff of a new, free seasonal daily newspaper to be launched on Cape Cod. The paper will run June 23 through Labor Day and publish Tuesday to Saturday.
Daily assignments will include breaking news, feature stories and event coverage.
Reporter will be expected to shoot and edit video for online publication. Reporter would also assist editor with localizing regional and national stories for Cape Cod.

See news release below about the Cape Cod Day:

CAPE COD —GateHouse Media New England will launch a free, seasonal daily on Cape Cod starting in June, the company announced this week.

The new publication, Cape Cod Day, will publish Tuesday through Saturday beginning June 23 running through Labor Day weekend. The paper will be distributed free across Cape Cod at hundreds of locations with an average daily distribution of 25,000.

"The focus on the new daily paper will specifically target the tens of thousands of summer visitors, as well as vacationing Cape Codders, who enjoy this beautiful place we get to call home year-round," said Mark Skala, publisher of GateHouse Media's Cape Cod region. "The editorial focus of Cape Cod Day will be to produce fun, informative stories and resources for readers such as local news, things to do with the family, arts and entertainment features, and stories that highlight the people, businesses and natural beauty of the Cape environment."

GateHouse Media currently publishes long-standing and award-winning weekly community newspapers on the Cape, including the Cape Codder, The Register, Harwich Oracle, Provincetown Banner, Bourne Courier, Sandwich Broadsider, Falmouth Bulletin and Nantucket Indepedent. When asked about the risk of launching a new seasonal daily, especially when the nation is in the midst of a recession and the newspaper industry is experiencing its own challenges, Skala said there is risk with anything that is new and innovative, but he is confident that reaching an audience during the peak tourism season with a free, creative and informative newspaper will prove successful.

"This is a paper produced by Cape Codders who call Cape Cod home and want to offer visitors and tourists a glimpse of the Cape through our perspective," said Skala. "This new free daily will also be an affordable alternative to advertisers, and to readers who don't want to spend $1 a day for a newspaper."

Production of the Cape Cod Day will occur out of the Orleans newsroom where the Cape Codder and Harwich Oracle newspapers are published. In addition to drawing on the local resources of the Orleans, Yarmouth and Provincetown newsrooms, Skala said editorial staff assigned to produce the seasonal daily would be able to capitalize on the links to greater Boston and regional newspapers in the GateHouse family to provide relevant news beyond the Cape.

Additionally, Skala said there would be a close relationship between the seasonal daily and GateHouse's online Web sites including WickedLocalCapeCod.com and Wicked Local town sites.

Within hours of the company's internal announcement about the planned launch, Skala said the sales force had already booked front page ads with local Cape Cod businesses for the entire 11-week print run.

"The initial response so far to Cape Cod Day has been incredibly positive and encouraging," said Skala. "People are hungry to have an alternative source for news, information and a new, affordable opportunity for local businesses to advertise."

GateHouse Media New England is publisher of more than 100 weekly and daily newspapers, including the Patriot Ledger of Quincy, the Brockton Enterprise and the Metro West Daily News of Framingham Send brief cover letter, resume, and two published clips to Matthew Belson, New Media Editor, The Cape Codder, 5 Namskaket Road, Orleans, MA 02653 or mbelson@cnc.com
