Patrik Henry Bass is an award-winning journalist who has written and edited for numerous publications including The New York Times, O, The Oprah Magazine, The Washington Post, Entertainment Weekly, Time Out New York and Publishers Weekly.
He is books editor at Essence, the nation’s leading African-American title with more than 7.7 million readers each month. Since he arrived at the magazine in January 2000, Bass has overseen a successful expansion of its renowned books section by introducing major editorial franchises such as The Essence Book Club, re-launching the Essence Short Fiction Contest, creating the influential Essence Best-Sellers List and this year’s forthcoming Essence Literary Awards.
Bass is also a member of the magazine’s senior features team, where he writes and edits a wide-range of articles including profiles, personal service stories and special projects.
He is co-author of In Our Own Image: Treasured African-American Traditions, Journeys and Icons (Running Press, 2001) and wrote Like A Mighty Stream: The March on Washington, August 28, 1963 (Running Press, 2002), which received favorable notices in Black Issues Book Review, BookSense, Publishers Weekly, Library Journal and The Washington Post Book World.
Bass has made numerous appearances speaking about media and publishing, including CNN’s Weekend Edition, The Tavis Smiley Show, Today in New York, BET Nightly News and Talk of the Nation on National Public Radio.
He currently teaches magazine editing in New York University’s Department of Journalism, where his students produce Manhattan South, the bi-annual campus publication.
