Joe Cutbirth spent nearly two decades as a reporter, political writer, press secretary and communications director before founding his own media consulting firm in Austin, Texas. His work for The Wichita Falls (Texas) Times-Record News, Morris News Service, and The Ft. Worth Star-Telegram have been cited for merit by: The Texas and Oklahoma Associated Press Managing Editors associations, The Texas Women's Political Caucus, The Dallas Press Club and The International Reading Association. He was Texas Democratic Party communications director for the campaigns of Gov. Ann Richards (1994) and Clinton-Gore (1996). His freelance work has appreared in The San Francisco Chronicle, Education Daily, Northwestern Magazine and The Texas Observer, and he was contributing author to Beaches Bureaucrats and Big Oil: One Man's Fight for Texas (1997) and The Lonely Planet Phrase Book (1999). He has a Bachelor's degree in journalism from The University of Texas at Austin, a Master's degree in communication, culture & technology from Georgetown University and an M.Phil. in communications from Columbia University, where his doctoral research examines the role The Daily Show with Jon Stewart played in the 2004 presidential campaign.
