Foundations of Journalism, the gateway course to the undergraduate Journalism major at NYU, is being taught in two parallel, nearly identical lecture constructs this fall, taught by Prof. Kroeger and Prof. Flanders.
The recitation sections are key to the experience. Their talented instructors come from the department’s roster of long-time adjuncts and experienced recent alumni. Here is the group who will be working with the lectures this fall:
Lisa Armstrong

Lisa Armstrong is an award winning journalist who has written for several publications including National Geographic, Parade, In Style, The Washingtonian, Essence, Working Mother and Ms. She grew up in Nairobi, Kenya and has made frequent trips to Africa in the past couple of years, writing stories mostly about women. She recently won an award from the American Society of Journalists and Authors for an article on a rural Kenyan village formed by women who were allegedly raped by British soldiers. In addition to an M.A. in journalism from NYU, she has a Master’s in urban planning with a concentration in international development and has written and edited for the World Bank and UNICEF.
Jason Boog

Jason Boog is a staff writer at the investigative reporting publication, Judicial Reports (http://judicialreports.com). He also edits The Publishing Spot (http://thepublishingspot.com), a website that helps aspiring writers find a foothold in the new media world. He has written for The Columbia Journalism Review, The National Law Journal, The New York Law Journal, and Newsday. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a literature degree and served in Peace Corps Guatemala. He earned his M.A. in journalism at NYU. Mary Kate Frank

Mary Kate Frank is a staff writer at Hearst’s Quick & Simple magazine. Previously she was an associate editor at Teen Newsweek and a reporter at The Herald News in West Paterson, New Jersey. Her work is featured in the anthology Twentysomething Essays by Twentysomething Writers (Random House, 2006). Her writing also has appeared in The New York Times, the Star-Ledger, the (Bergen) Record, and Best Life magazine. In the summer of 1999, she was a reporting and writing fellow at The Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Florida. She graduated from NYU with a Master’s in journalism in 2000.
Adam Fuller

Adam Fuller has been an adjunct professor of journalism at NYU since September of 2006. He is also a freelance writer and has contributed to a variety of New York newspapers. He is currently editing a novel and a non-fiction book, and completing his second screenplay, an historical script set during the Peloponnesian War.
Jill Grossman

Jill Grossman has been a reporter and editor for New York City community newspapers and magazines for more than a decade. Most recently a senior editor at City Limits magazine, Jill has also served as editor of The Westsider and Chelsea Clinton News and as managing editor of the The Riverdale Press. She was an assistant press secretary to Manhattan Borough President Ruth Messinger. Her freelance work has appeared in several outlets, including The New York Observer and the New York Blade. She currently serves as an advisor to Highbridge Horizon, a nonprofit community newspaper in the South Bronx. Jill also teaches adult literacy, including media literacy, at LaGuardia Community College, and is an adjunct professor at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Jill has taught Reporting I at NYU since 2004.
Lynda Hammes

Lynda Hammes is the associate publisher of Foreign Affairs, where she has worked since 2003. She manages the magazine’s business operations, from manufacturing to publicity strategy. Lynda is working with the editorial staff on developing a new vision for the magazine’s web content, which will be unveiled with a redesign launch in 2008.
Nadine Heintz

Nadine Heintz heads the Alumni and Development program at NYU’s Department of Journalism, where she received her M.A. in magazine journalism in 2000. Before joining NYU, she served as staff writer and associate editor at Inc. magazine. She started out as a staff reporter and writer at Worth magazine. She is currently co-writing a book and is a charter member of the Foundations of Journalism teaching team.

Priya Jain is the features and books editor for BUST magazine. A graduate of NYU’s Cultural Reporting and Criticism program, she has written features and book reviews for The New York Times Book Review, Salon, the New York Observer, BUST, and other publications.
Paula Pou

Paula Pou is an associate editor at M. Shanken Communications, home to Wine Spectator and Cigar Aficionado, where she helps oversee Impact, the research department’s bi-monthly publication. Prior to joining Shanken, she spent four years reporting on branding and marketing trends at Adventure Publishing Group as an assistant editor. She has worked as a freelancer for lifestyle magazines such as Planet and sometimes wears a music journalist hat for indie blogs such as BrooklynVegan and Stereogum. She is a freelance fact-checker for American Express Publishing. She graduated from NYU in 2001 with a B.A. in Journalism and English Literature.

David K. Randall is a staff reporter at Forbes magazine, where he covers general assignments and writes book reviews for Forbes.com. Previously, he contributed to the Metro section of The New York Times, covering breaking news and features in New York and New Jersey. He’s also written for New York magazine, Salon, and several newspapers in California. He earned a BA in English and Political Science from the University of California, Riverside, before receiving his MA in journalism from NYU.
Jackie Schneider

Jackie Schneider is a freelance reporter and researcher for In Style magazine and New York magazine. As a freelance writer, she has written for NewYorkMag.com, Time Out New York, Mediabistro.com, Metro New York and Velvet Park magazine. In 2006, she received a Master’s in journalism from New York University. In 2005, she attended the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, where she was a candidate for the Best New American Voices anthology. She received the George Harmon Coxe Award in creative writing from Cornell University in 2001 for a work of short fiction.
