From 1998 to the present, Professor Leighty has worked at The New York Times as a wire editor, company news editor, copy editor and business desk writer. He has also held positions at Reuters America and the Associated Press as a business editor and writer and as a general assignment writer. He has taught graduate "Copy Editing Workshop" at NYU since 2001.
