Mark Oppenheimer received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. (in religious studies) from Yale University, where he now works as the coordinator of the Yale Journalism Initiative. He is the author of two books, Knocking on Heaven's Door: American Religion in the Age of Counterculture and Thirteen and a Day: The Bar and Bat Mitzvah Across America; the former religion writer for the Hartford Courant; and a freelance writer for The New York Times Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, and Slate.com. Oppenheimer has previously taught at Stanford University and Wesleyan University.
