The CRC program teaches students to work in a variety of genres including the review, the critical essay, the profile, the op/ed commentary, the long-form reported piece, and the book. Book projects from CRC graduates:

  • Alumna Lauren Sandler published “Righteous: Dispatches from the Evangelical Youth Movement,” with Viking in the fall of 2006.
  • Alumnus Dennis Lim is working on a biography of the filmmaker David Lynch for John Wiley & Sons.
  • Alumna Meline Toumani is at work on her first book, a nonfiction narrative work about diasporas, nationalism, and historiography. She will examine the way that Armenians and Turks throughout the world cling to clashing stories about the massacres that marked the end of the Ottoman Empire. Her book will be published by Random House in 2012.
  • Alumnus James Westcott’s “When Marina Abramović Dies,” a critical biography of the performance artist, was published by The MIT Press in March 2010 and cited in The New Yorker.
  • Alumnus Thomas Chatterton Williams’s memoir, “Losing My Cool: How a Father’s Love and 15,000 Books Beat Hip-Hop Culture,” was published in April 2010 by The Penguin Press.
  • Carrie Havranek, a CRC alumna from 2000, just published a two-volume reference book about women in popular music with Greenwood Press, titled, “Women Icons of Popular Music: The Rebels, Rockers, and Renegades.”
  • Alumna Kathryn Joyce’s “Quiverfull: Inside the Christian Patriarchy Movement” was published by the Beacon Press in 2009.
  • Alumna Juana Libedinsky published her book “English Breakfast,” with Editorial Biblos (Argentina) in 2006.

Internships

Internships enable students to gain real-world experience, learn new skills, and make contacts in the magazine, newspapers and publishing world. Should they wish to intern, either during the summer or in the second or third semester, Cultural Reporting and Criticism students have an array of publications to choose from.

Internships are facilitated with the help of the Journalism Institute’s career services office, or through our network of CRC alumni.
