Heralded by some as the next wave in journalism and dismissed by others as a C-SPAN for cranks, weblogs—or blogs, as they have come to be known—have become a medium unto themselves within the larger medium of the Web. These online diaries have mushroomed from the hobby of a few tech-savvy individuals into a hugely popular, do-it-yourself media movement on the Net.
