Can Print-on-Demand save newspapers?

It shocked me that newspaper and news content in print does not have to die, it may just need to completely change the way it gets distributed.
..........
This raised yet another question:
Can newspaper organization survive simply by counting on transforming its aggregate bulky print stuff to more streamlined and customized electronic version?

Newspaper as filter are facing more challenge than ever

It’s not news that newspapers circulations nowadays, generally speaking, are down because of its rivals on the web, news aggregate sites, bloggers, etc.
One important reason is that readers rely less on newspapers as “filter” for them to navigate through overwhelmingly huge amount of news happening in the world today.
News aggregate sites are tracking the reading habits of their users as a whole and then use the data to advise readers based on what others like them are reading.
So, now it’s the “computer” making more and more news judgement rather than editors.

Amazon is launching new movie download service this week, following myspace’s first try on allowing viewers downloading hit TV drama 24 hours for $2 per episode.
By putting his TV comedy Colbert Report on web, TV comedian Stephen Colbert rides YouTube to Web stardom .
What about news industry? Are news business ready? Couple of weeks ago,the UK newspaper Guardian has decided to put news articles on their website as soon as they are done, even before their newspapers are printed. Perhaps it is for the first time in news industry, a renowned brand newspaper is prioritizing its web publication over its print paper.
Perhaps, Like Jeff Jarvis said in his blog, newspaper should reconsider on its role in the new media age, replacing the proud metaphor of “bakery” with “garden”, moving from “content provider” to “nurturer” or “filter”.
