Corrections Corporation of America’s Political Action Committee has donated over 91% of collected funds to support Republican candidates running for the United States house, senate and presidency over the past four years, according to my calculations from the Federal Election Committee filings.
It does not surprise me that this is the case. Republican’s often come down hard on prisoners and immigration issues. As more people fill American jails, CCA’s stock rises, and profits increase. The fact that the PAC attached to CCA’s name would want to show support for those issues by handing over money to the Republican Party is almost expected.
What I have a problem with, however, is how does this money go to use. Do Republicans that the PAC helps to fund support harsher immigration laws before or after they receive money? Do senators want a new prison built in their state, or does the money sway their mind?
I hope to think that the money has no effect, but then again CCA’s stock has risen from $12 on January 2, 2002 to stand at over $52 today. An impressive rise, even if the result came from detaining families of illegal immigrants, like in Don’t T. Hutto located near Austin, TX, or true criminals at Bay Correctional Facility in Panama City, FL. I just hope the money spent to politicians had nothing to do with it.
