Maine plans to transfer 125 medium security prisoners to Oklahoma due to an overflow of 245 inmates, according to the Portland Press Herald. When I think prison problems I do not think Maine. If the Pine Tree State can not control its prison population, then how do large states, which constantly have to deal with poverty and overcrowding deal with their prison population?
Another thing, the state is overcrowded by only 245 prisoners. A high-school gym could fit that many prisoners; the state can not manage a prison large enough to fit the local basketball team?
This seems to be another case where the state has a problem with overcrowding and instead of fixing it passes it along to a different state. Is this necessary? I think Maine should go back to the legislator and just think for ten minutes. I am sure in Maine there can be a more solid solution then busing prisoners to Oklahoma. If there is not, then not only should Maine worry, but so should the rest of the states. If Maine can’t solve its problems how will California, which is thousands of prisoners over the limit, solve its problems? It can’t by shipping prisoners, and neither can Maine.
