Only in California: Birds v. Windmills

In a glimpse of how an environmentally preoccupied world may look, a not-for-profit group in California filed recently filed suit against the wind farm at Altamont Pass.

The suit charges that the wind farm, which is one the largest in the nation and generates enough power for 120,00 homes, is also responsible for the deaths of migratory birds and raptors that fly through the mills. The group hopes to shut the farms down for a quarter of the year.

It is hard to determine how best to resolve such an issue, as obviously the well-being of the birds – particularly top predators – is very important to California’s ecosystem. Perhaps a move toward larger and slower turbines would help spare local wildlife. However any step back from such a prodigious source of clean energy seems very regrettable.

It is also too bad that windmills seems to constantly be under attack by the left – from environmentalists in California or the liberal elite in Marth’s Vineyard.
