Photojournalism

Course Number: JOUR-GA 1263

Day & Time: Wed | 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM

Location: Online

Instructor: Andrea Bruce

4-credits.

This course will teach the basics of photojournalism as well as explore its history and evolution through lectures, discussions, assignments, and editing sessions. Topics include a brief history of photojournalism and ethics, what it’s like to be on assignment, editing images for publications, documenting a place, capturing an event, environmental portraiture, and how to build a photo essay. During the second half of the semester, students will create a narrative photo essay that brings all of their learned skills together. Students should expect to dedicate serious time photographing their assignments outside of class.

Please note: This course is focused on how to tell stories visually, and on story development – not on the basics of how to use a DSLR camera. Students using phone cameras are welcome and encouraged to take the class. Students who have access to and experience with a DSLR camera will have the opportunity to sharpen their camera skills in sessions with the TA and recommended Linked In Learning courses.
