The exhibition launch will be heralded with a panel discussion featuring East Village Other (EVO) editors and reporters on Tues., Feb. 28, 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Carter Journalism Institute. To RSVP, call 212.998.8044 or email panuska@nyu.edu.

Panelists will include: The New York Times’ Claudia Dreifus, New York Times columnist Steven Heller, and Alex Gross, all EVO writers, along with EVO Editor Peter Leggieri and Dan Rattiner, an EVO co-founder and founding publisher of the Hamptons’ Dan’s Papers, and poet Ed Sanders, whom Life magazine dubbed “a leader of New York’s Other Culture” in 1967. The discussion will be moderated by John McMillian, a professor at Georgia State University and author of Smoking Typewriters: The Sixties Underground Press and the Rise of Alternative Media in America.

Reporters interested in attending the opening event must RSVP to James Devitt, NYU’s Office of Public Affairs, at 212.998.6808 or james.devitt@nyu.edu. The event will also be webcast live on The Local East Village at http://nytimes.com/eastvillage and archived later on the exhibition site at http://EastVillageOther.org.

Along with The Local East Village, the exhibition sponsors are NYU’s Fales Library and Special Collections, and NYU’s Program in Museum Studies, with support from the New York Council for the Humanities, the NYU Humanities Initiative, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, and Alan Abramson.

In January, NYU’s Fales Library and Special Collections received Peter Leggieri’s collection of both EVO and Gothic Blimp Works, an underground comics tabloid published by EVO in 1969.
