GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL !!!

In ten days, soccer fans around the world will finally see their dream come true. At last, a movie about soccer. Goal!, written by an unknown screenwriter, directed by an unknown movie maker, and starring unknown actors, is a movie about soccer. The story could not be more stupid (an unknown soccer player becomes famous) but we don't care. We are millions of fans and we wanted our movie.

It is almost impossible to understand why Hollywood hasn't already produced such a movie! I mean, we all know that everybody likes soccer! How could they not base their production investment on that reality? This $30 million first opus produced by Milkshake Films will be followed by two others, both on the same budget according to imdb.com. While Goal!2 is almost finished and will be released in September 2006 in Europe, Goal!3 will arrive in September 2007.

Despite my obvious expectations for this movie, Goal! has had little Box Office success since it first appeared in European theatres in September 2005. Maybe there is something wrong with the Buena Vista Distribution, but either way it apparently didn't even break even. Or perhaps imdb.com is wrong, I don't know.

But actually I have my own theory. Although you may have potentially the biggest audience in the world, they are already captivated by and in love with real players. These real players have amazing stories that we can watch live each week for 90 minutes! Why would you go to see a movie that tries to imitate nature when you can just sit and enjoy the real thing? Sports shown on TV are the original reality shows. And true reality found in sports doesn't need Hollywood. He he, soccer fans are not Hegelians.
