Extreme celebrity gossip sites win fans on the net

Ashlee Spinoso, an avid Jessica Simpson fan, grazes through the web searching for the most ruthless gossip and breaking photos of her favorite. The 20-year old New York University student, lands on PerezHilton.com, the most extreme and frequently updated independent celebrity-obsessive site. PerezHilton claims over 600,000 hits a day and maintains a no-limits policy on the amount of celebrity trash commentary allowed.

Perez Hilton, whose real name is Mario Lavandeira, has skyrocketed to almost-famous status after chronicling celebrity happenings beginning in early 2004. Since then, the web has spawned a plethora of juicy gossip sites all claiming to carry the most exclusive gossip and photos.

Lavandeira isn't surprised his site has become such a phenomenon. "We might not all want to be celebrities, but we definitely would want to live like one," Hilton said. "America is obsessed with celebrities because it's an aspirational thing."

And Spinoso, a Queens native who loves celebrity fashion icons like Simpson, agrees. "It's not really about wanting to be famous," she said. "It's about being able to see a picture and read a story and put yourself in the celebrity's shoes."

For celebrity-loving fans like Spinoso, becoming enmeshed in a celebrity's daily life through the internet is addictive. The internet remains open 24-hours-a-day, long after Entertainment Tonight and Access Hollywood have gone off the air.

These sites can be cutting-edge, provocative, and smutty. Not surprisingly, they sometimes infuriate the celebrities themselves. Colin Farrell and Hilton are currently in the middle of a lawsuit, after Hilton published photos from a sex tape of Farrell and an ex-girlfriend. Pete Wentz, guitarist and singer for the band Fall Out boy, speaks out against Hilton at his concerts. Hilton posted nude photos from Wentz took of himself on his Sidekick.

For fans looking to get their hands on some juicy gossip, PerezHilton.com is not the only site taking pride in destroying a celebrity's dignity. Here's where to find the sassiest trash-talk and sleaziest celebrity photos on the web.

Perez Hilton: (http://perezhilton.com) All the photos and text are uploaded by Hilton himself and include candid shots of celebrities shot by Hilton himself. The most recent included the (actual) Hilton sisters partying with friends at an exclusive friends-only party held for Paris' boyfriend in the Hilton's Hollywood Hills mansion. Perez Hilton's information is top-notch; he receives breaking information from publicists, agents and celebrities themselves. (Perez often parties with the likes of Hilton and Lindsay Lohan.) Perez Hilton adores rude, snappy put-downs. The celebrity he loves to trash most is Tom Cruise: on PerezHilton.com, Cruise and Katie Holmes' newborn child Suri is known as "Alien Cruise." Visitors to the website are also allowed to share secrets and bash celebrities on comments attached to each post.

Oh No They Didn't!: (http://community.livejournal.com/ohnotheydidnt) Includes more breaking news that any other site because anyone who is registered as a user to the site can post photos and information about celebrities, unleashing a flood of anonymously posted trash talk. Registered users can view secret locked entries, including Jennifer Aniston's nude balcony photos. ONTD! contains more photos than other sites, but the information and articles can range from exaggerated to unreliable to false. The feedback from registered users is sassy and trash-talk is encouraged. The site hosts links to high-resolution photos of celebs on the red carpet.

Go Fug Yourself: (http://gofugyourself.com/) As translated on the site, "Fug" means "a state of extreme ugliness," and Go Fug Yourself takes pride in ranting about celebrities in their fugliest outfits and posting very fugly photos. The website authors, who are only known as Jessica and Heather, sift through photos of celebrities to find the most hideous fashions and poke fun at celebrities shamelessly wearing donated designer duds.

A Socialite's Life: (http://socialitelife.com/) While the name of author, Miu von Furstenberg reeks of elegance, the site is one of the trashiest out there, providing a recycled version of info and photos on other celebrity sites like ONTD! with even harsher commentary. (Actual socialites rarely make appearances.) For fans looking for a quick, easy read, hilarious satirical captions and a summation of the top celebrity stories do the job.
