A Different Dialogue

Today, as she does every Sunday, Rev. Selfe has prepared a post-sermon meal for the congregation. She microwaves some meatloaf and mashed potatoes, while Alex prepares a salad and pours out Dixie cups of soda. And as it’s Sam’s 90th birthday, there is cake for all. We celebrate his longevity with one candle (90 would set the whole thing on fire, Christine jokes), prayer, and patchy song as he shuffles around the table to accommodate hugs for everyone.

Rev. Selfe sits up at the end seat of the confetti-strewn table, looking as if to say something. But with her twinkling smile, she touches her lips with fingertips to thank Sam for his years; words weren’t needed anyway.
