Newspapers: Stop Whining

Each and every morning I read stories about how newspapers are slowly fading away. This morning the Denver Post announced that it is cutting jobs due to falling numbers. This is just another story in a long line of newspaper layoffs. Day in and day out these stories tell us about how newspapers are losing money and are slowly being phased out as the number one news source for Americans who are favoring the digital world.

I have no problem with that statement; I think it's very valid. But I also believe that newspapers shouldn't just sit there and cry about it. Where's the concerted effort to say, "Hell no, we won't go?" If I were in the newspaper industry, there's no way that I would let these young digital punks take my job. Not without a fight anyway.

Now what they are specifically to do ... that's an issue for marketing strategists to tackle. I'm just saying they need to stop acting like a conquered city and fight for that number one spot.

I think newspapers are doing something. You forget that they're using the internet. Many publications like the New York Times are available on-line. Others have started blogs, like the Washington Post. ELLEgirl has gone completely digital.

The problem is, not all of their internet ventures have been completely successful and they're still working out the kinks.
