Facebook Groups Are The New Carnations

Instead of making pilgramages to Anna Nicole Smith's hotel room, fans are 'battling' to get their emotions heard via blogs, websites, and facebook groups according to the AP.

On facebook there are over 500 groups related to Anna Nicole Smith. Not all are in good taste though. For example there is "There's Nothing Funny About Death... Unless It Involves Anna Nicole Smith" and the haunting "People like Paris Hilton and Anna Nicole Smith Should Die A Horrible Death...." The last group got their wish.

It may sound contradictory, but having these online posts is a great way to share one's grief and even make it better. Parents of some of my deceased high school friends have set up websites in their memories in order for people to send condolences, gain information, and keep in touch.

Anna Nicole Smith's death is obviously a little different and there is a much broader spectrum of opinions and emotions, or lack there of. But I think this trend to build a conversation around grief, whether it's digital or otherwise, means much more than a flower in the end.
