How Dare You (Re)Watch the Oscars!

Did you catch the hilarious parody song from last Sunday's Academy Awards with Jack Black and Will Ferrell? Well, if you didn't, you probably won't.

BoingBoing looks at an article in Variety from Tuesday, which shows the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences is cracking down on YouTubers--and it seems like they're getting their way.

From the article:

Ric Robertson, exec administrator for the Academy, said the organization had its content pulled "to help manage the value of our telecast and our brand."

The official Oscar.com Website, which is run as a joint venture of the Academy and Disney's ABC.com, features a five-minute clip of highlights from the three hour, 51 minute broadcast. That footage, along with "Thank-You Cam" videos from backstage, are preceded by ads.

The author, Scott Kirsner, elaborates a bit more on his blog, CinemaTech.

But what about it? First, YouTube's deal with CBS went sour, now this? Maybe it was a bit too soon to make "You" the person of the year when "They" still have massive legal teams.

considering how much the oscars love clipshows and how banal the ceremony was this year (well, pretty much every year), i'm sort of surprised they're cracking down so hard on this. i mean, i can't see clips being anything but supportive of the oscars as an institution. having clips on the Tube would probably help them track which parts of the show worked and which didn't, to help improve for next year. reinforce the name, the winners, in the blogsphere. oh well.
