Perez Hilton Lives Up To His Reputation

Mario Lavandeira, better known as Perez Hilton of PerezHilton.com, describes his blog as "Hollywood's Most-Hated Web Site." Now I know why he's so hated.

For more than a month I have been trying to set up an interview with "The Gossip Gansta" for our class blog profile. This is an interview, mind you, that he had already agreed to do via our professor, Patrick Phillips.

Lavandeira never responded to any of my e-mails, and in every phone call he said he was "really busy" and gave me a vague period in which to call him back.

Finally, earlier this week, he sighed and said "no" to the interview, claiming that he was, surprise, too busy.

I understand he is legitimately a busy person. He almost obsessively updates his blog and covers events first hand from around the United States, and even the world.

Yet, he also widely publicizes all his interviews and TV shows, which are growing by the day. Obviously, he is not media shy and is not "too busy" for mainstream media exposure.

Apparently, though, "We Want Media" and NYU Journalism does not count as a worthy source of exposure. It's not only disappointing because he already agreed to the interview and had more than a month in which to find 20 minutes of his time, but he is also a NYU alum.

While I love PerezHilton.com for its snarky and unapologetic voice, it's a lot less entertaining when he serves it up cold to a fellow journalist and NYU student. I definitely do not like the man behind the Perez Hilton facade ... but I probably will still go back to the blog for the snarkiness and attitude that has made me a fan in the first place.

Shame on me.

I'm not surprised. Perez always struck me as someone who thinks he's way more important than he is... which is evident even in his pseudonym.

Good for you, let it out. It's seems hypocritical that a blogger, a person dedicated to the conversation that the blogosphere allows, would not take the time to answer a couple of questions from a fellow blogger.

Perez Hilton is only "busy" when something does not benefit him. I've e-mailed him before and gotten responses within 5 minutes (and I'd sent the e-mails at, like, 4am) and I've e-mailed him before and never gotten replies. He's always available if there's gain for him. If not, he's "busy".

He stole FOUR scoops from my blogger friends. The first scoop, my friend e-mailed to Perez over a year ago. We were both readers of his blog & genuintely liked Perez back then. His blog was much funnier before his head got so damned big.

So my friend has this tiny blog, he updates it just for fun (much like mine, we both have office jobs - so we get bored) and after posting his scoop, he passed it on to Perez to be nice.

Within 10 minutes, Perez Hilton had a new post on his blog. He did not SOURCE my friend though. All it would've taken was 5 seconds more to slap a link on the bottom of the post to give my friend's blog credit. My friend e-mailed him asking Perez to edit his post with a source link, Perez NEVER WROTE BACK.

Perez's stolen scoop is a huge success. My friend's tiny blog remains tiny. He takes takes takes.

Perez will only link sources if they are in Technorati's Top 100. If it's a small blog (that can't send a hefty amount of readers back to him), he will steal their work and leave them with no credit.

His blog gets bigger and bigger (because other Top 100 blogs keep sending links back to him, like TMZ.com for instance - they're all A-list gossip bloggers and they just send links back and forth to stay on top) and the small blogs (the ones he is stealing from) get smaller.

I knew he screwed over photogs, bloggers, and the gay community...

But for him to do this to an NYU student? New lows. And it just shows how selfish he really is.

If you scroll down a bit, you'll see his high school yearbook stuff. His senior quote is very original...

Forget about that weirdo, see if you can get an interview with Jessica Coen!!!!

Hey there, Andrea. I own and operate x17online.com, X17 photo agency's public blog. We are suing Perez (Mario) for more than $10 million in a copyright infringement lawsuit. I too attended NYU's J School and I'd be happy to talk to you if you're interested. - brandy@x17agency.com
