NBC and News Corp's New Online Video Venture

The New York Times ran this story about the News Corporation and NBC Universal's new online video venture. But is it too little and too late to beat out the established online video sites?

Yes. Especially the too little part.

"It’s notable that the planned service intends to offer only TV shows that are already available ... and movies that can be downloaded elsewhere."

So, why should you care? Well, these videos come complete with advertising, just like on real TV!

The article also states that this is an attempt to reconcile the image of the old media as dinosaurs:

"Why should we let savvy intermediaries like Google or Apple hog the relationships with consumers or advertisers? And why should we allow them to create valuable new businesses in the process?"

Because you're a couple of years late to the game. Moreover, even this venture seems too radical for some other companies that NBC and News Corp. tried to enlist, like Viacom and Walt Disney. They both declined the offer.

There is one new online video service that I'm looking forward to, and that's Joost. Here's hoping it doesn't disappoint.

I agree, and I think corporate video ventures are missing the allure/potential of the publishing format. The way I see it, there's a division between user generated material and aggregates of pre-produced videos. The truly interesting/unique/funny/etc user videos have sparked careers; the internet can provide artistic cultivation. Unsurprisingly, the corporate powers are whining about advertising and connection with consumers. Wah, grow a pair. Take the hint and try something different NBC. Instead of trying to gobble up and lock down the new market, perhaps the focus should be on inspiring new content/talent of their own. Start with quality, the audience will follow.
