A Different Portrait of Katrina Victims

And now for an article with absolutely no liberal bias from The Boston Herald.

An investigation by the Herald has found that New Orleans residents who are staying in Cape Cod are “living it up” and “blowing cash on booze and strippers.” It goes on for paragraphs citing examples of nameless Hurricane Katrina victims, who for all we know could be completely fabricated, supposedly drinking alcohol and going to strip clubs and living at Cape Cod’s Camp Edwards on “taxpayer expense.” This article has some of the worst reporting I have ever seen. And it is very clear that this is not objective. Even if it were true that some of those staying at Camp Edwards were binge drinking, the article makes no attempt to show the Edwards dwellers in any other light. Certainly not by actually talking to anyone staying there. It seems that all their investigative reporting consisted of spying on the victims and talking to some local bartenders.

Here is a little taste of how bad this is:

On Oct. 5, the Herald observed a virtual parade of evacuees from a bus stop in the Wal-Mart parking lot in Falmouth to nearby liquor stores. Some emerged and openly swilled from brown-bagged containers, while others poured booze into jugs or plastic cups and casually sipped drinks at the Wal-Mart bus stop.

Anyway, I’m still looking for that liberal bias...
