ABC Radio Sale is a Good Thing

When $2.7 billion is involved, I guess it’s kind of a big deal. Citadel Broadcasting is set to buy 24 ABC Radio stations, which are owned by Disney. The media conglomerate will actually be putting 11 of these newly acquired stations into the hands of local ownership.

I know, I know. This might seem boring but it is actually a big deal, if you think about it. Disney, a giant in the media world, is handing the reigns to the little guys. Perhaps this is something bigger—media is finally realizing that bigger isn’t always better. More localized ownership allows for a better product that is more tailored toward a specific demographic.

It seems as though radio just didn’t fit into Disney larger scheme, which is fine. At least it recognized this fact and did something about it. Not that I feel there was anything wrong with ABC radio, but sometimes change is actually a good thing.
