The New York University Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute is proud to offer a new full-tuition scholarship to a National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) member, Indigenous Journalists Association (IJA, formally known as NAJA) admitted to one of the ten NYU Journalism graduate programs. These scholarships are open to all U.S. citizens or permanent residents  regardless of identity or background so long as the candidate shares the core mission of our partner organizations.

Stenbeck Fellowship

This one-semester fellowship covers tuition, fees and health insurance, and includes a one-semester stipend. Stenbeck Scholars will be chosen based on merit. All applicants to the Institute will be considered, and no separate application is necessary.


Tuition Scholarships

The Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute awards several partial tuition scholarships to help defray the total cost of tuition. These scholarships are merit based and competitively awarded. All applicants to the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute are automatically reviewed for their eligibility during the admission process. No separate application form is required for consideration.


Anne O’Hare McCormick Memorial Scholarship

The Anne O’Hare McCormick Memorial Scholarship honors the legacy of Anne O’Hare McCormick of The New York Times, who in 1937 was the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for foreign correspondence. The McCormick Fund was created in 1954 as a posthumous tribute by McCormick’s colleagues in the Newswomen’s Club of New York.

Global Journalist Fellowship

The Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute at New York University invites applications for the 2024 Global Journalist Fellowship. To be considered for this fellowship, you must first complete and submit an application to an MA program of your choice at the NYU Journalism Institute, in the Graduate School of Arts and Science. Please review fellowship application guidelines before applying.

This fellowship provides journalists with two semesters of funding to study at one of the masters programs at NYU’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute. Our programs require three semesters of study for the M.A. degree (one requires four semesters).

American Journalism Online Reporting Scholarship

American Journalism Online Program

This full tuition scholarship is limited to American Journalism Online applicants. The mission of this scholarship is to award an incoming NYU AJO graduate student who has completed outstanding journalistic reporting that explores the social, economic, or political challenges within any marginalized community. This scholarship is open to all U.S. citizens or permanent residents, regardless of their identity or background.  


Reuters Graduate Fellowship

Business & Economic Reporting

The Reuters Fellowship provides substantial tuition assistance, editorial training, mentorship and internship opportunities to an incoming graduate student in the Business & Economic Reporting (BER) program at New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute. This scholarship is open to all U.S. citizens or permanent residents, regardless of their identity or background.

One Semester Fellowships

All in-person concentrations.

Onesemester fellowships are awarded at the discretion of each concentration director. No additional materials beyond the GSAS application are required. An applicant’s academic ability and financial need will be reviewed. All applicants are considered for this fellowship, regardless of their identity or background. These fellowships are highly competitive and contingent on available funding, with only one being awarded to a student per concentration.


Foreign Language and Areas Studies (FLAS) Fellowships

Global & Joint Program Studies

FLAS fellowships are competitive awards for the purpose of enabling students to study a modern foreign language as an integral part of their academic program in preparation for a career that will utilize their language studies. FLAS fellowships are awarded by the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies and the Hagop Kevorkian Center. Qualified applicants meeting relevant restrictions are eligible to apply.


The Goren Fellowship in Global and Joint Program Studies

Global & Joint Program Studies

A three-semester full fellowship, including tuition, registration and services fees, health insurance, and stipend, for a GloJo applicant with exceptional journalistic and academic promise. Students in all GloJo partner programs are eligible for this award, except those receiving funding or FLAS grants through their partner departments and centers. No additional materials beyond the GloJo application are required.


Felsten-Fishman Fellowships

Science, Health & Environmental Reporting

The Felsten-Fishman Family Foundation sponsors a one-semester fellowship (including tuition, a generous stipend and other expenses) for an incoming SHERP student who has demonstrated great promise in science, health or environmental journalism. No additional materials beyond the SHERP application are required.
