Miles Johnson

Reporting the Nation & New York 2025

Miles Johnson, an NYU Reporting the Nation student and exceptional graduate of Morehouse College, completed his degree in Communications with a minor in sports journalism. Driven by a desire to enhance his skills as a writer and interviewer, he chose to attend New York University’s journalism graduate school. His ambition extended beyond sports, as he sought to cover politics and general news in New York. Among his transformative experiences at NYU was his favorite class with professor James McBride, whom he took twice consecutively. McBride’s mentorship profoundly impacted Miles’ approach to storytelling, emphasizing the importance of uncovering the human element in every story. McBride’s advice to seek out untold stories, such as those of the 12th man on a team, revolutionized Miles’ journalistic perspective across all topics.

Following his undergraduate studies, Miles was awarded the prestigious Warner Bros. Discovery and National Association of Black Journalists Sekou Smith Memorial Internship. In this role, he worked as an on-site producer in Atlanta, managing NBA app alerts and writing notable pieces like his article on former Villanova stars turned FIBA World Cup teammates: Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, and Josh Hart. In spring 2024, Miles further showcased his talents at Fox Sports as an Original Programming Intern for “First Things First,” where he pitched topic ideas and created engaging graphics. His exemplary performance earned him the Winning 10 Award at the Black Sports Business Symposium, recognizing him as one of the top rising leaders in the sports industry.

This summer, Miles will continue to make strides in his career as a social media marketing intern for NBC during the Paris Olympics, working in Stamford, Connecticut. Here, he will connect global audiences with the inspiring moments of the Games. Additionally, Miles has successfully built a substantial following on social media with his sports podcast, boasting over 14,000 followers on Instagram and 12,000 on TikTok. He attributes his podcast success to his advanced skills in post-production, social media knowledge, video editing, and graphic creation. Miles also acknowledges the Reporting the Nation program for pushing him out of his comfort zone, enabling him to excel in covering a diverse range of topics beyond sports. His dedication and multifaceted experiences make him an outstanding figure in the field of journalism.
