2022 – Fall

The Beat: Cityscape (Print/Online track)

Course Number: JOUR-UA 201, section 10

Day & Time: Asynchronous

Location: Remote

Instructor: Mary W. Quigley

Prerequisites: Journalistic Inquiry: The Written Word JOUR-UA 101. This asynchronous course is open only to journalism majors taking 12 or more credits abroad (NYU London excluded). It fulfills “JOUR-UA 201 The Beat” requirement for the major.  Email undergraduate.journalism@nyu.edu for permission number.

This semester you will wander hidden alleys, sample new cuisines, hear the clack of trollies and carillons, speak (or try to) a foreign language, befriend strangers, and try to cram in myriad experiences.

The sights, sounds, smells of an international locale are the perfect setting to learn and practice feature writing.   Designed for students spending a semester abroad, this asynchronous, online course will teach feature story techniques–research, reporting, and writing—using the adopted city as a source for articles. The study-abroad locale becomes a classroom that students explore, not as tourists, but as writers, seeking sources and stories.

Notes: Required for students pursuing the Print/Online track in the journalism major and the Minor in Print and Online Journalism. Counts as an elective for the Minor in Broadcast and Multimedia Journalism.
