Journalism and Society: Reporting on Gender Issues
Course Number: JOUR-UA 503, section 3
Day & Time: Thu | 2:00 PM – 4:30 PM
Location: 20 Cooper Square, room 653
Instructor: Jill Filipovic
Prerequisites: None
In Gender in Journalism, students will both explore gender as a beat and critically examine how the media covers gender issues, from women’s rights to the LGBTQ community to men and masculinity. We will learn how to sensitively and accurately report on communities that have been marginalized and misunderstood; discuss how to responsibly cover trauma; and reflect on how gender and other biases shape the news we read, watch, and listen to. This course will involve reading, discussion, written reflections / criticisms, and reporting work, and will require students to write a reported feature on a gender-related topic.
Notes: Counts as an elective for the journalism major and both journalism minors.
