Introduction to Sound Design

This course introduces students to methods of creative sound design and scoring. Students will learn how to build sonic worlds using both original field recordings and sound libraries, and use music to give their audio pieces a unique and uniform sound. Other aspects of the course include working with music stems, communicating with composers, and making taping location an intentional sound design choice. Sessions include Deep Listening exercises inspired by Pauline Oliveros and John Cage, close analysis of Protools sessions of popular shows and trailers, and explorations of both impressionistic and realistic approaches to sound design.
