On emerging media platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts, explainers are some of the most popular content types. In this class, we will examine and create explainer videos in order to push the limits of explanatory reporting. The course will adapt to new platforms as they arise; the current iteration will focus on short videos for TikTok or Instagram Reels. Students will analyze journalism and trends on one or more emerging media platforms; will learn about social media analytics; and will create original videos. We will also discuss the economics of the influencer economy and take a critical perspective on the role of AI in media production.
