This is a craft class in the personal essay. It will investigate the uses of self and explore various modes of personal writing. We will also address how to use the skills of fiction writing in non-fiction. The instructor will work with each writer on developing a compelling voice or persona. We will read autobiographical works by writers like Charles Lamb, Junichiro Tanizaki, Henry Greene, Zadie Smith, Vivian Gornick, Janet Malcolm, John Jeremiah Sullivan, Edouard Levé, Leslie Jamison and Elif Batuman. With all writing assignments and exercises, you will get extensive feedback from an experienced editor.
