2024 - Spring
The Beat: Global Beat (Print/Online track)
Course Number: JOUR-UA 201.010
Day & Time: Asynchronous
Location: Online
Instructor: Mary W. Quigley
Prerequisites: Journalistic Inquiry: The Written Word JOUR-UA 101
This semester you will wander hidden alleys, sample new cuisines, hear the clack of trollies and carillons, speak (or try to) a foreign language, befriend strangers, and try to cram in myriad experiences.
The sights, sounds, smells of an international locale are the perfect setting to learn and practice feature writing. Designed for students spending a semester abroad, this asynchronous, online course will teach feature story techniques–research, reporting, and writing—using the adopted city as a source for articles. The study-abroad locale becomes a classroom that students explore, not as tourists, but as writers, seeking sources and stories.
Notes: Departmental permission required. This asynchronous course is only available to students studying away at one of NYU’s global sites. Please complete this Spring 2024 Global Beat Application Form to obtain permission to enroll.
Counts as a required course or a journalism elective depending on the student’s preference and program of study:
- For students pursuing the print/online track in the journalism major or the minor in print and online journalism, this can count as the required Beat course (JOUR-UA 201) or an elective.
- For students pursuing the broadcast track in the journalism major or the minor in broadcast and multimedia journalism, this counts as an elective.
