2026 - Summer
Journalism Skills That Can Change Your Life (ONLINE) (Session 1) (2-credit)
Course Number: SS1: JOUR-UA 25
Day & Time: Tues. 5:00-9:00 pm
Location: Online
Instructor: Betty Ming Liu
This intensive workshop introduces non-journalism majors to core journalism skills that are essential for success in school, work and your best life. You’ll explore reporting, writing, storytelling, interviewing and other communication skills. You’ll learn the news literacy tools to navigate the world.
You’ll also learn key tricks of the craft for effectively expressing and presenting yourself with confidence and flair. This process includes helping you find your voice through journaling, a practice that is increasing popular among everyone from journalists to creatives and business leaders.
Because our time together is precious, attendance is mandatory at all six classes. Each class is four hours long! This is why missing one class results is an automatic B, at best. Missing two classes is unacceptable. We need everyone on-camera and fully engaged in our classroom activities. Attending from your job or internship is grounds for failure. Being connected on Wi-Fi is also a must because you will be following the online daily news cycle every day, including on weekends for homework.
Notes: Counts as an elective for the journalism major and both journalism minors.
