Covering News on YouTube (2 credit) (Session 2)

Course Number: SS2: JOUR-UA 25

Day & Time: Mon/Wed 6:00-8:00 pm

Location: 20 Cooper Sq.

Instructor: Nandini Gupta

Online videos are taking over traditional TV for many audiences, whether it’s YouTube Shorts for quick, bite-sized videos on the top news stories of the day or more in-depth storytelling in longer videos.

In this course, you’ll learn how to pitch and conceptualize videos for both breaking and feature news. You’ll script your pieces, interview people, film yourself (if you’d like to be on camera) and your sources, and edit your videos (basic editing skills are required for this course). You’ll also dive into the world of social video and platforms like Instagram and TikTok, and understand the basics of audience analytics and video strategy.

We’ll have guest lecturers bringing their expertise from digital video, social video, and strategy backgrounds, and your assignments will center around creating news explainers, feature videos, and interview-styled videos. You’ll not only be experimenting with different styles of producing video, but also cover different beats, from politics to sports, and much more. By the end, you’ll have strong materials you can add to your portfolio.
