Sonya Singh

AJO Class of 2022

Amid pandemic shifts, Sonya was offered a new role — teaching undergrad journalism at California Baptist University, where she advised the student newsroom. To do that, though, she needed a master’s degree. What she found through AJO was not only a toolkit for better reporting, but a model for transformative journalism education. Now, she is the director of the media group at the same university, while still working as a freelance writer and photographer within the world of arts and culture. Her work has appeared in The Guardian, Los Angeles Magazine, NME and more.

There’s no reasonable word count that can fit my appreciation for the way AJO pushed me away from comfort and toward a more confident voice — as a writer and a new educator. Every faculty member poured into my growth from a well of experience, and every student inspired me with a level of work I wanted to chase. I use what AJO gave me every single day.”
