As numerical data becomes a more important part of the investigative process, we as journalists need a thorough understanding of where to get it and what it means. Whether you’re canvassing a data set for story ideas or smoking guns. Part 1 will develop your ability to clean data and process it enough to give up its secrets. This course is taught in Excel and will begin at a basic introductory level – no experience required! Instructor: Zoe Fraade-Balanar is an interaction Designer and Data Artist. Her work has been used by outlets such as eBay, FINRA, The New York Times, The Hubble Space Telescope, The US Dept. of Labor, The US Postal Service, and IBM.


Free for NYU journalism students, registration is required. NYU journalism students: Free Alumni: $45 Part 1 of a two-part journalism workshop. Participants should register for parts 1 and 2.
