Writers Jen Percy, Scott Korb, and Leslie Jamison talk about the complexities of writing about the suffering of others–trauma, illness, violence, poverty–in various reportorial modes: journalistic, critical, essayistic. They will discuss the intricacies of journalist-subject relationships, the boundaries of privacy, and the dilemma of subjectivity.

Leslie Jamison is the author of The Empathy Exams, an essay collection, and The Gin Closet, a novel.

Scott KorbScott Korb is the author and editor of several books, including Light without Fire: The Making of America’s First Muslim College and Gesturing Toward Reality: David Foster Wallace and Philosophy.

Jen PercyJen Percy is the author of the nonfiction book Demon Camp (2014) and writes for magazines like Harper’s and The New Republic.

Ben Ratliff is a music critic at the New York Times and the author of several books including Coltrane: The Story of a Sound.
