In the months following the Taliban’s return to power, the regime made repeated promises to the international community that women would be allowed access to work, school, and a wide range of civil activities. None of them have come true. Instead, the Taliban has banned education beyond the sixth grade for Afghan girls. Increasingly, as women have taken to the streets to protest the disappearance of their rights, the regime has retaliated against many with untold brutality in order to demonstrate, above all, that speaking out is dangerous. How do we follow this story from a distance? How do we understand the stakes of reporting it? Please join Metra Mehran, Fatima Faizi, Azmat Khan, Zahra Joya, Eliza Griswold for a discussion.
