2021 – Spring

Writing For Reporters

Course Number: JOUR-GA 1182.002

Day & Time: Monday 9:30-12:30 [Blended]

Location: 7 East 12th Street, Room LL23

Instructor: Ta-Nehisi Coates

Writing For Reporters—is designed for journalists who are seeking the tools to better convey the import of their work. Reporting, and I would argue research, is the foundation of journalism. But having accomplished that reporting, and that research, one arrives at the final critical step—the writing. Over the course of this semester we will study this final step through reading others, and improve our application of that step through writing ourselves. We will write three essays throughout the course, stressing the lessons we learn about the craft of writing. Each of these essays will be workshopped, revised and then turned in for a final grade.

If you are interested in Ta-Nehisi Coates’ spring 2021 course please submit a 1000 word essay on why you want to be in this course to Noah Daly by 11:59 pm on November 25th, 2020. Late applications will not be considered. Your application should be saved in a Word or PDF file and include your full name, net id, class year (first, second), and concentration in the heading of the paper. NOTE: Only students who are currently journalism master’s students will be considered for this course.
