As we emerge from our unprecedented year of pandemic quarantine into a reshaped reality, this course will report on politics and activism from the front lines of New York City at a turning point. You’ll learn to cover issues of national reach from a local angle, building beats around topics that you care about, such as inequality, race, gender, health, the environment and much more. With a fresh slate of local New York City and State officials up for election in November, we’ll dive into important political races from city council to mayor, as well local expressions of activist movements including #Metoo, #BlackLivesMatter, immigrants rights, LGBTQ advocacy. With concerns about public health and vaccination thrown into the mix, today’s scene is ever-surprising and moving at lightning speed. So will we be nimble, learning to bob and weave with fast-changing developments—all while asking questions and taking notes!
