Methods & Practice: Devised Live Journalism Laboratory is an intensive j-term course focused on creating an original piece of science journalism live performance. Students will conduct research, conduct audio interviews, multimedia editing and production, and fact-checking for the staging of an upcoming live show with guest artist Adam Savage (Mythbusters) in collaboration with performing artists, magicians, musicians, and other guests. The content will stem from historical and scientific narrative source materials from 19th century science and technology (Eadweard Muybridge and Armand Hipplute Louis Fizeu). This course will draw on the design principles outlined in Savage’s book Every Tool is a Hammer, and critical texts on devising including: Making a Performance: Devising Histories and Contemporary Practices by Govan et al, and The Viewpoints Book by Bogart & Landau.

This course will be taught in coordination with Tisch Professor Daniel Leeman Smith and is cross-listed with a January term course he is teaching, Performing Science & Magic: Devised Theatre Laboratory (THEA-UT 665, section 1).
