The Beat: Climate City (Print/Online track)
Course Number: JOUR-UA 201.004
Day & Time: Wed | 10:00 AM – 1:40 PM
Location: 20 Cooper Square, Room 743
Instructor: John Surico
Prerequisites: Journalistic Inquiry: The Written Word JOUR-UA 101
Today, cities find themselves on the frontlines of a rapidly warming planet. New York City is no different; the island metropolis is reminded daily of the threats posed by the climate crisis, marked by the extreme, like Superstorm Sandy, to the more mundane, like heat waves and near snowless winters. That has forced the city to act, turning Gotham into a hotbed of solutions to both mitigate and adapt to the problem.
In this Beat class, we’ll find and tell the endless stories of New York’s changing climate through rich reporting and intricate detail. We’ll build upon fundamental journalism skills to craft more nuanced written works that hear from a wide range of New Yorkers—advocates, activists, policymakers, or everyday residents—deeply impacted by these issues. And we’ll go out into the field often, to hone our interviewing, explore what’s around us, and better learn the city we inhabit.
Notes: Required for students pursuing the Print/Online track in the journalism major and the Minor in Print and Online Journalism. Counts as an elective for the Minor in Broadcast and Multimedia Journalism.
