2025 - Spring

WRRII – AudioRep

Course Number: JOUR-GA 1022.013

Day & Time: Tue | 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Location: 20 Cooper Square, Room 654

Instructor: Hilke Schellmann

Despite all the barriers journalists face, we are in the golden age of investigative reporting: journalists are working together across the globe, holding the powerful accountable. And anyone can do this work, because reporters don’t have to wait for a tip anymore: a lot of information in the United States and around the world is public and journalists just need to learn how to find these newsworthy nuggets.

This course is designed to introduce students to reporting, researching, storytelling, writing, editing and fact-checking of investigative audio stories.

Over the course of the semester, each student will write bi-weekly story memos documenting their progress and discuss obstacles and solutions in class. They will also report and produce a substantial investigative audio story in small groups.

Students will master the fundamentals of investigative reporting, including tools and skills. There will be lectures, “best practice” analysis, in-class exercises, class discussions, one-on-one feedback from the instructor and critiques of students’ work. We will also discuss ethical dilemmas in investigative journalism. In addition to class attendance and participation, students will need to budget time outside of class to report, produce and edit their work.

Pitching stories to professional sites with an eye to publication is an integral part of this class. International students who wish to use the Curricular Practical Training option for this practicum class should contact the NYU Office of Global Services and NYU Journalism Career Services.
