Studio 20 2014

Job: Data and Interactive Journalist at Public Radio International
Location: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Hometown: Johor, Malaysia

What I Do Now

I help find and create data and interactive stories, and train the staff on how to present stories through more digital-native approaches such as data, interactive and multimedia. I am also part of PRI’s effort to integrate radio news programs with digital platforms.

Before Studio 20

I was a journalist with Malaysia’s most visited news website, Malaysiakini.com, from 2005 to 2013. I covered domestic politics, elections and investigated corruptions and electoral fraud.

During Studio 20, I worked directly with…

ProPublica, NBC local news websites, MIT Technology Review, Media Development Investment Fund, Foreign Policy

Final Project Partner

Foreign Policy

Problem I helped solve…

I developed a full data journalism program, DataN, which became a startup that provides affordable and customizable training package for newsrooms to create data journalism with limited resources.

Professional hops since graduating…

I was a fellow at the Tow-Knight Center for Entrepreneurial Journalism, CUNY, a data fellow at International Business Times, and the founder of DataN, a startup that provides affordable and customizable training package for newsrooms to create data journalism with limited resources. I was also a Google Journalism Fellow in 2015, creating data and interactive stories at Public Radio International.

Why Studio 20

It gave me a great foundation in understanding the challenges and opportunities faced by new media in the digital era. From here, I have the knowledge and tools to venture into more specialized areas of digital journalism.
