Speakers
R. Douglas Fields is a developmental neurobiologist who studies how the human brain develops and changes over time, as well as how individual brain cells interact and form memories. He has also written for general audiences, including his recent book Why We Snap, about why we sometimes cannot control our rage. He is currently the section chief for nervous system development and plasticity at the National Institutes of Health.
Andrea McDaniels is an award-winning journalist for the Baltimore Sun, for whom she has covered all manner of health topics since joining the staff in 2001. McDaniels has been particularly recognized for her work on the impact that traumatic stress has on children’s development. She also writes avidly about fitness, and is an enthusiast herself.

One of America’s most respected science journalists, Robert Lee Hotz is a science writer at the Wall Street Journal and a Distinguished Writer in Residence at the Carter Institute of Journalism at NYU. He is the president of the Alicia Patterson Foundation, which funds independent journalism projects around the world, and an elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
