NYU Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute

Freelancing doesn’t mean you’re all on your own. Other journalists want to help and on May 1st this panel will provide tips and support to make you a more successful freelancer. Many media outlets rely on freelance writers, photographers, and videographers to cover events all over the world, so it’s important to understand how to navigate this market. Hearing from journalists with extensive freelance experience, NYU students and alumni are invited to take part in a discussion on the key issues that freelancers face, from pitching and negotiating with editors to financial management and developing story ideas.

Featured panelists include:

  • Ivie Ani, freelance journalist and on-air correspondent. She is currently Music Editor at Okayplayer, and her work has been featured in Teen Vogue, PAPER Magazine, and Complex Magazine, among various other publications.
  • Jordyn Rolling, freelance correspondent and producer. Her latest role brings her to NBC New York as a freelance correspondent/producer, and her other roles include positions at VICE Media, BET Networks, and the Hollywood Reporter, along with more publications.
  • John Surico, freelance journalist and researcher. His recent work includes contributions to the New York Times and VICE.com

The panel will be moderated by Sylvan Solloway, director of career services at NYU Journalism. Sponsored by the Office of Career Services at the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute and the Wasserman Center for Career Development.

Open to current students and alumni. RSVP here: freelancealumnipanel.eventbrite.com
