This class is an important and, in many cases, final step in the progression towards a journalism degree at NYU. Having already taken several reporting and video production classes, students are now ready to hone their craft as advanced reporters, culminating in the production of a capstone video.

Over the course of the semester, students will produce news segments for NYU Now, the journalism institute’s weekly broadcast, as well as work on targeted assignments designed to expand professional multimedia reporting capabilities. And as competency grows over the semester, so will the complexity of assignments.

In addition to providing a valuable learning experience, this course is also meant to yield several clips. This is especially true for the capstone assignment, which will be between 6 and 9 minutes in length and should serve as a kind of calling card for student journalists entering the professional world.

Throughout the semester we will pay special attention to some core competencies of video reporting and storytelling. There will be attention to interviewing skills. We will also focus specifically on visuals – both identifying visual storytelling elements that help convey the message of student reports and in selecting appropriate b-roll to help illustrate stories.

Notes: Required for students pursuing the Broadcast track in the journalism major. Counts as an elective for both journalism minors

Equipment Insurance is required: Purchase equipment insurance for a full year through College Student Insurance (CSI) https://collegestudentinsurance.com/. CSI covers the gear checked out from the Journalism Equipment Room plus personal items such as laptops and cell phones. Our suggested CSI plan costs $155 with a $500 deductible.

Students enrolled in this course may need to obtain special audio-visual equipment which requires that they purchase insurance. For more information, please review the Undergraduate Multimedia Equipment Guide.
